Fragility Unveiled

When the mask falls, we are left bare before ourselves. That is where fragility, once accepted, becomes the hidden strength of being vulnerable.

The fall of the mask

When the mask falls, we find ourselves bare before ourselves, without the filters we usually use to protect ourselves, to adapt, or to appear strong. It is a moment of truth: fragilities emerge, and hidden sides surface without mediation.

Letting the mask fall is a powerful metaphor for freedom from roles and expectations. It leaves room for an authentic self, stripped of pretence.

A bolt from the blue

My mask has fallen more than once. Some of those times were predictable, and in the rush of life I picked it up and put it back on without asking too many questions. The last time was a bolt from the blue.

The hardest fall came during the pandemic, in a period of forced isolation that unhinged everything I believed was solid. It was like watching a house of cards collapse, one card after another. With every collapse my discouragement grew, because I did not know how much strength and patience it would take to rebuild what had broken.

Facing one’s own fragility

In those moments you realise how fragile you are and how much strength it would take to put the pieces back together. It is a strength you look for within yourself and struggle to find.

The path asks for acceptance and patience. Finding that strength also means accepting your own limits, and discovering that sometimes our true resilience lies precisely in fragility.

A passage of growth

In many cultures, the fall of the mask appears as an essential passage of growth, for the individual and for the community. Letting it go means accepting the complexity of who we are, including the fragility we have learned to hide.

That fragility also holds the seed of our strength and of our capacity for genuine connection with others. Only when we see ourselves and show ourselves without masks can we truly begin to change, embracing everything that makes us human.

Crisis as opportunity

Discovering your fragility in a difficult moment is a common experience, yet it leaves a deep mark. A crisis may arrive suddenly or build slowly: a loss, or a personal challenge that seems impossible to overcome. In that instant, fragility weighs like a stone.

The awareness often comes as a shock, almost a defeat. You realise that control is an illusion and that, at certain moments, your own resources seem to vanish. And yet accepting vulnerability becomes a turning point, the first step towards growth. Asking for help and seeking refuge in what reassures you can be an act of courage.

Art as refuge

In my case, the refuge was art. I went back to the happy moments of my childhood, when I made things with my hands: kneading, cutting, and shaping without pause. It was an almost alchemical process.

Every small element I joined, every layer I built, was an attempt to put the pieces of the soul back together and turn them into something different, something magical. It was like finding a hidden code in my hands, able to bring to life a unique and mysterious work, open to new meanings. In this transformation, fragility stops being a limit and becomes a source of authenticity and rebirth.

Towards healing

That is how I felt the wound begin to close. What remained was the pain of questioning myself to understand where the crack had opened, and how I could have let go of the reins so far as to be swept along by a pace that had consumed and emptied me, turning me into a container without content.

Art became a process of working through and of making, a sublimation of abstract thought. A fire that burns inside and lets you rise from the ashes, like a phoenix.

And you, have you ever lived a moment when your mask fell? How did you face your fragility?
